Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Ware "Beeston Priory" Tureen Stand ~ Zacharia Boyle

19th century
For Sale by Antiques4EU
Description

An attractive Early 19th Century Antique English Georgian Blue and White Transfer Ware Pottery Sauce Tureen Stand, printed in a medium blue palette with a titled view of "Beeston Priory, Norfolk", from the Antique Scenery series, here attributed to Zacharia Boyle of Hanley, Staffordshire, { 1823 - 1830 }. This on the basis of the attribution made by Dick Henrywood in his article, "Transferware Source Prints", published in Antique Collecting magazine, Vol. 45, No. 6, published in November 2010, in which is illustrated a soup tureen from the same series, depicting Caister Castle, Norfolk, { Page 16, Fig. 4 }, which the author attributes to that firm. The piece here illustrated clearly bears the same pattern border as that depicted on the aforementioned tureen, and it is now accepted that it was produced by the same maker, this particular example being illustrated on Page 23 of Henrywood's "The Transferware Recorder 1 ~ Selected British Views", published by Reynardine Publishing in 2013. The reverse with underglaze blue printed series and pattern name, ANTIQUE SCENERY BEESTON PRIORY NORFOLK this within a garter cartouche surmounted by a crown. Clear stilt marks, deep footrim and small old hairline.

Height ~ 19.70 cm. / 7.75 inches ~ Width ~ 19.70 cm. / 7.75 inches ~ Depth ~ 2.50 cm. / 1.00 inch ~ Year ~ Circa 1825

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Underglaze cobalt transfer printing on pearlware: English pottery of the 1820s.
Three distinct spur marks on the reverse: pieces stacked on stilts during firing.
Printed title cartouche beneath a crown: factory practice standard from 1820 onwards.
Fine network of glaze crazing: natural ageing of an early earthenware body.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This early nineteenth-century English Georgian earthenware tureen stand displays a medium blue and white glazed palette with a central landscape depiction of Beeston Priory, Norfolk, from the Antique Scenery series, attributed to Zacharia Boyle of Hanley, Staffordshire. The circular pottery platter exhibits a central recessed well, deep footrim, clear stilt marks, a small old hairline, and a dense floral graphics border. The reverse includes an underglaze blue printed series and pattern name within a garter cartouche surmounted by a crown. Measuring 19.7 cm high, 19.7 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep, the dish functions as an English country house display piece suitable for placement on a sideboard top. The tableware item coordinates with traditional interior displays and integrates into a collection of antique Staffordshire ceramics.

Transferware developed in 18th-century England using copper-plate engravings to print complex patterns onto earthenware before glazing, making decorated tableware widely accessible.

Cobalt oxide ink was printed onto tissue paper from an engraved copper plate, transferred to the unglazed clay body, and fired beneath a clear protective glaze.

Authentic pieces frequently show slight pattern transfer seams, stippled background shading, deep cobalt tones under glaze, and maker or pattern marks impressed or printed on the base.

Displaying these pieces on traditional plate racks, mounting them on accent walls, or placing them flat on sideboards creates visual depth in both classic and modern schemes.

Hand wash gently with warm water and mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges, dishwasher cleaning, or extended immersion to protect the glaze and earthenware core.
