This early 19th-century Victorian porcelain teapot takes a rococo shape with a scroll handle, curved spout, molded finial lid, and a scalloped footed rim. The white porcelain body carries a variant of the Autumn Leaf pattern featuring pink iridescent metallic lustre decoration heightened with gilding. A miniscule firing crack exists at the top of the handle, completely original to the piece. It measures 19.00 cm high, 14.00 cm wide, and 26.03 cm deep. Today, this Welsh ceramic piece suits placement upon a sideboard top within an English country house dining room or kitchen. A buyer uses such a teapot for display or serving during formal tea services, where the reflective lustre glaze catches interior lighting. The sturdy porcelain construction and traditional proportions allow regular handling by collectors of antique ceramic tableware and Gaudy Welsh pottery.

FAQs

Pink lustreware is a type of English earthenware or porcelain coated with a thin metallic film containing dissolved gold, which produces a distinctive metallic sheen ranging from pink to purple upon firing. First produced in the late 18th century, it gained widespread popularity across Staffordshire and Sunderland throughout the 19th century.

Victorian pink lustreware was created by applying a metallic solution derived from gold chloride over a previously glazed ceramic body. When fired in a kiln at a reduced temperature, the chemical compound fused to the surface, creating an iridescent, paper-thin metallic coating over hand-painted or printed designs.

Authentic 19th-century pink lustreware often features slight irregularities in the glaze application, slight wear on high points due to age, and hand-painted or transfer-printed decoration underneath the iridescent lustre. The underlying ceramic body typically displays characteristic Victorian moulding shapes, footed bases, and period finials.

An antique pink lustre teapot can be styled as a focal decorative piece on a sideboard, display cabinet, or fireplace mantelpiece alongside glass or timber accents. Placing it within an English country or eclectic display adds texture, historic detail, and colour contrast to contemporary living spaces.

Lustreware ceramics should be washed gently by hand in warm water using a mild dish soap and a soft non-abrasive cloth. Dishwashers, harsh chemical cleansers, and abrasive scrubbers must be avoided, as the metallic lustre glaze layer is delicate and easily worn away by friction or strong chemicals.
