Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Hand-filed pierced cutouts and edges: typical Victorian metal finishing.
Turned hollow socket with incised ring turnings: standard mounting for a processional staff.
Deep, uneven oxidisation across the unpolished reverse: natural age and exposure.
Softened contours on the face: long handling and repeated brass polishing.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This nineteenth-century antique English Victorian Friendly Society pole head originates from Paulton in North East Somerset. Fashioned from cast brass with a warm golden hue, the folk art piece displays surface patination and minor wear appropriate for its age. The triangular silhouette incorporates a central heart cut-out, an upper diamond piercing, scroll side elements, and a crowned finial surmounted by a small cross. Below the decorative head sits a turned socket with horizontal reed mouldings, leading to a bullet-shaped terminal. Measuring 24.5 cm high, 10.8 cm wide, and 2 cm deep, this artifact once topped a ceremonial wooden stave carried in village processions. Today, the pole head suits display on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk as a decorative shelf object or cabinet curiosity. Its distinctive gothic and Victorian folk art motifs bring historic character to traditional interiors. Collectors of social history items and fraternal society memorabilia will find it a compelling display piece for an architectural study or living room shelf.

A ceremonial emblem mounted on a wooden staff carried by members of mutual benefit organisations during annual parades and gatherings in 19th-century Britain.

They were typically sand-cast from solid brass or copper alloy, then hand-filed, chased, and polished to produce distinct flat geometric or symbolic shapes with an integral socket at the base.

Genuine examples feature hand-filing marks, cast sockets with fixing holes, natural surface oxidisation in recessed areas, and specific symbolic designs linked to regional British lodges.

Mount the emblem on a custom metal display stand or place it in a shadow box to highlight its sculptural silhouette on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or desk.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners or harsh metal polishes that strip away historical patina and surface oxidisation.
