Delightful Antique Victorian Oak 2 Drawer Desk Table 1880

19th century
For Sale by Billy Hunt & Co.
Description

A rather good looking and great quality 2 drawer Victorian English oak desk/side table of sensible scale; it works well as a desk but also perfect for a hallway or bedroom. A few less of its type in this fetching tone of oak - just a little more interesting than mahogany. The look makes it great for a period home but also for a more modern setting.

It's an attractive piece with well turned legs, original brass handles, reeded drawer fronts and framed sides - all solid with sensible and attractive aging. The desk sits strong, is weighty for its size and is ready for placing after a careful clean.

A good looking English oak desk with 2 drawers c1880.

Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1880s:
Machine-turned ring-and-collar legs: standard late Victorian cabinet making.
Medullary rays on the top surface: quarter-sawn solid oak.
Reeded drawer fronts: typical late 19th-century revival detail.
Darkened brass backplates and handles: original surface oxidisation from age.
Uneven mellowing and handling marks to the top: decades of domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

This Victorian English oak desk table, dating from 1880, functions as a practical writing surface, hallway console or bedroom accent table. Solid construction meets a warm brown finish in this piece, presenting a moulded edge top above twin drawers fitted with original brass drop handles. Reeded fronts decorate the drawers, while the four legs display elaborate turning throughout their length, ending in small bun feet. The timber exhibits gentle, attractive aging visible across the surfaces. Practical proportions measure 75 cm in height by 107 cm in width and 49.5 cm in depth, providing a kneehole clearance of 58 cm high by 91 cm wide. Placement suits traditional period properties or contemporary rooms needing a functional wooden table with storage.

FAQs

Victorian writing desks typically feature sturdy solid timber construction, frequently crafted from oak, mahogany, or walnut, and incorporate storage drawers supported by turned or tapered legs.

Late 19th-century furniture making prominently utilised solid oak, pitch pine, and mahogany, held together with hand-cut dovetail drawer joints and accented with cast brass hardware.

Authentic late Victorian oak pieces exhibit natural timber grain, dovetail joints inside drawers, era-appropriate brass handles, and subtle uniform wear around legs and work surfaces.

A Victorian oak writing table functions effectively as a compact work desk, a hallway console table, or a dressing table, pairing seamlessly with modern task lighting and minimalist seating.

To preserve solid oak finishes, apply a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keep timber away from direct heat sources, and wipe spills instantly using a dry cloth.
