An Arts and Crafts period oak table, dating from 1900, is constructed from warm brown solid English oak with a rectangular top inset with a green leather skiver. The piece includes a single frieze drawer fitted with two stylised drop brass handles, above an H-stretcher base and tapering legs with square feet. Pierced corner brackets decorate the underside of the table top, and moulded edge details frame the green leather surface. The table measures 75 cm high, 76 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. In a modern interior, this versatile table functions effectively as a writing desk in a study, a lamp table in a living room, or a functional surface in a hallway. It offers practical placement against a wall or freestanding within a room, providing surface space and drawer storage while maintaining a compact footprint suited to various domestic settings.

Emerging in the late nineteenth century as a reaction against industrial mass production, the Arts and Crafts movement emphasised traditional craftsmanship, honest joinery, and functional design, often drawing inspiration from natural forms and medieval construction techniques.

Furniture from this era predominantly utilised native timbers such as solid oak, often featuring quarter-sawn grain figures, mortise-and-tenon joints, pierced spandrels, and hand-hammered copper or brass metalwork alongside inset leather writing surfaces.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-finished woodwork, visible structural joinery such as exposed tenons or dovetails, unpolished or antiqued metal hardware, and distinctive stylised pierced motifs or cut-outs within the timber supports.

This type of compact writing table works well in a hallway, bedroom nook, or study, pairing harmoniously with minimalist contemporary seating, warm neutral wall paint, and brass desk lighting to create an eclectic interior scheme.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a quality beeswax polish periodically along the grain; clean the inset leather top gently with a damp cloth and treat it with specialist leather balsam to prevent cracking.
