Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1900s:
Cold-painted finish with natural wear on raised hair: early twentieth-century Viennese casting.
Inset glass eyes with dark pupils: typical detail for Vienna animal bronzes.
Square nuts on the underside fixings: older threaded fasteners before modern hexagonal types.
Oxidised verdigris in the bow recesses: natural ageing to copper-alloy surfaces.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Originating from Austria around 1900 during the Victorian period, this desk accessory functions as a spring paper clip. Modelled as the head of a Yorkshire terrier, it is crafted from cold-painted bronze featuring brown and green tones, and is mounted onto a rectangular mahogany timber board measuring 24 cm by 16 cm. The dog sculpture displays a textured coat, detailed facial features, and a green ribbon bow tied between both ears. The mahogany base incorporates stepped edge mouldings around its perimeter, while the bronze components show expected signs of wear from age, including visible glue residue around the reglued ears and the original dark patina. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or office study, the item sits flat upon a desk top to secure correspondence. The hinged mechanism operates as a spring clip for holding paper notes. The unrestored bronze head retains its original hand-painted surface finish alongside the polished timber plinth. It integrates easily into traditional workspaces or studies alongside vintage stationary collections.

Cold-painted bronzes refer to cast bronze figures painted with multiple layers of oil-based pigments without firing, a technique popularised in Vienna during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

These items were typically cast in metal using intricate moulds, hand-finished with unfired paint layers, and mounted onto spring-loaded mechanisms or polished timber bases.

Authentic period examples feature fine sculptural detail, original maker or foundry marks such as Geschutzt, and characteristic natural paint wear consistent with age rather than uniform modern coatings.

Place this functional decorative item atop an office desk, a stack of vintage books, or an entryway console table to add historical texture to a contemporary study.

Clean gently using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to preserve the delicate paint layers, avoiding liquid cleaners, harsh solvents, or direct exposure to damp conditions.
