Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian dinner gong takes the form of two curved bovine horns mounted in silver-plated collars upon a rectangular English oak base. The base features a carved egg-and-dart moulding around the lower edge, supported on small turned wooden feet, while a hammered silver-plated metal disc hangs suspended from the upper horn tips by brass hardware and a brown fabric strap. A matching wooden striker rests on two silver-plated stands across the front, complete with a rounded wooden knob and a silver-plated finial. The materials display warm brown tones throughout the polished wood and mottled natural horn, alongside bright metallic finishes on the plate and brass mounts. Measuring 31 cm in length, 17 cm in width, and 31.5 cm in height, this table top piece sits comfortably upon a sideboard top or counter in a hallway, dining room, bar, or restaurant. The design evokes a Highland hunting lodge aesthetic, providing a functional musical instrument that doubles as a decorative accessory in a traditional or eclectic interior.

FAQs

Popularised during the late nineteenth century in British country houses, dinner gongs were functional tabletop devices used to announce mealtimes to household members across large estates.

These pieces typically feature polished silver-plated or brass acoustic discs suspended between natural materials such as polished bovine horns, mounted upon carved oak or mahogany plinths.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples display hand-carved wood bases with egg-and-dart moulding, silver-plated metal fittings, and natural variations in the colour and texture of the horn.

Position the piece as a sculptural centrepiece on a dining room sideboard, entry foyer console, or within a library bookcase to add texture and historical interest.

Clean the metal plate with a soft polishing cloth, nourish the carved wood base with natural beeswax, and keep natural horn away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking.
