This Arita porcelain teabowl originates from Japan during the Edo period around 1700. The exterior features hand-painted overglaze enamels in red, green, and yellow alongside underglaze blue, depicting a farming scene with figures, chickens, a man carrying bushels of wheat, and architectural pavilions, set against a white ground with a circular foot rim and a blue-trimmed rim. Typical very minor wear to the enamel is present with no damage or restoration. Measuring 4 cm in diameter and 3.75 cm in height, the diminutive bowl suits a bookshelf in an English Country House interior setting, where it can be displayed as a cabinet piece to highlight Japanese export ceramics.

Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramic wares produced in the Arita region and exported via the port of Imari during the Edo period (16031867), characterised by underglaze blue and overglaze enamel decoration.

These vessels were crafted from kaolin-rich porcelain clay, fired at high temperatures with an underglaze cobalt blue pattern, followed by secondary enamel firings for iron-red, green, and yellow pigments.

Authentic pieces often feature spur marks on the foot rim, slightly irregular hand-formed proportions, subtle iron spots in the glaze, and distinctive palette combinations typical of 17th and 18th-century kilns.

Displaying individual pieces inside open shelving units or on sideboards provides visual contrast against contemporary wood, marble, or minimalist plaster backgrounds.

Clean gently using lukewarm water and mild detergent with a soft microfibre cloth, avoiding abrasive sponges, chemical solvents, or automatic dishwashers to protect overglaze enamels.
