Fine Early Basalt Ware Teapot C1800 Likely E.meyer or Cobridge

19th century
Description

This fine basalt teapot for one was likely made by E. Mayer or John Mosley Cobridge. It’s a delightful example, part of a recently acquired collection, of nine fabulous basaltware teapots in varying sizes and designs. This example has a crossweave banded design around the body, a beautiful lid that fits very snugly, and a historic repair to the rim; otherwise, it is in good condition. On the inside is a label supplied by the original owner, who was meticulous in their referencing and documenting, obviously an avid collector of basalt ware, which highlights the possible provenance and origins of each piece I will be exhibiting online.

Black basalt ware is a fine-grained, unglazed black stoneware developed in Staffordshire during the 18th century, perfected by makers such as Josiah Wedgwood and produced across various English potteries into the early 19th century.

The material was produced using iron-rich clay mixed with manganese dioxide to achieve an enduring deep black body throughout, often detailed using engine-turning lathes or sprigged relief moulding prior to firing.

Authentic pieces feature sharp engine-turned geometric detailing, smooth hand-finished surfaces, light overall weight compared to later Victorian reproductions, and occasionally impressed maker marks on the base.

Its dark tone and refined architectural geometry make it an ideal accent on a marble fireplace mantelpiece, open shelving, or styled atop a polished sideboard within modern classic or dark academia interiors.

Clean gently with warm water and a mild non-abrasive soap using a soft cloth, avoiding chemical detergents, harsh scrubbers, or immersion in hot dishwashers to protect the dry matte finish.
