Rare Set of Early 19thc Wedgwood White Glazed Measuring Jugs with Iron Bands & Handles

19th century
Description

A rare set of early 19th-century Wedgwood White-Glazed Measuring Jugs with iron bands and handles would look fabulous displayed in any country kitchen. Very rare to find a complete set of three, full of character. Impressed to their bases, slight staining and discolouring with age, but aesthetically fabulous. I have left the iron in its original condition, but it would clean up nicely with some fine wire wool.

Declaration

Lee Sherman Antiques has dated these Wedgwood Ceramic Measuring Jugs to the 19th Century.

  • MotifsIron rim bands, Long flat handles, Graduated cylindrical bodies, Glazed earthenware surface

During the 19th century, ceramic measuring jugs were functional vessels manufactured by potteries such as Wedgwood for use in kitchens, dairies, and apothecaries to measure liquids and dry ingredients.

These vessels were crafted from earthenware or creamware ceramic bodies, reinforced with forged iron bands around the rim and fitted with long iron handles for structural strength.

Authentic pieces frequently display impressed maker marks on the base, characteristic creamware glazes, period manufacturing irregularities, and natural surface oxidisation on the metal components.

These utilitarian vessels can be arranged on open kitchen shelves, placed on a dining room sideboard, or utilised as functional containers for cooking utensils.

Wipe the ceramic surfaces gently with a soft damp cloth, ensuring the iron bands and handles remain dry to prevent accelerated rust formation and metal corrosion.
