19th century
Description

Regency burr satinwood sofa table

A fine and elegant Regency burr satinwood sofa table, dating from the early 19th century, showcasing the superb craftsmanship and restrained sophistication synonymous with the Regency period.

Constructed in beautifully figured burr satinwood, the table displays rich golden tones and striking natural grain throughout. The rectangular top is fitted with drop leaves, allowing the table to be used at its full width or reduced in size when space is at a premium, making it an exceptionally versatile piece for both traditional and contemporary interiors.

This Regency sofa table dates from circa 1820 and belongs to the Regency period. Made from burr satinwood, the piece has a rich golden brown colour with natural grain figuring and a smooth wooden finish. The rectangular top includes drop leaves on either side, rounded corners, and two frieze drawers fitted with small round brass knobs. The lower structure consists of splayed sabre legs, end supports, and a horizontal stretcher base, with small brass castors attached to the feet. Overall, the table measures 72 cm high, 150 cm wide, and 68 cm deep. In a modern interior, this piece works well placed behind a sofa, against a living room wall, or as a freestanding centre table or writing desk. The drop-leaf mechanism allows the surface area to adapt to different spaces, while the drawers offer practical storage for everyday items. The classic style integrates easily into both traditional period homes and contemporary settings as a functional statement furnishing.

Originating in the late 18th and early 19th centuries during the British Regency period, sofa tables were designed to sit behind a sofa or against a wall. They typically feature slim proportions, drop leaves supported by fly-brackets, frieze drawers, and twin pedestal or splayed leg supports joined by a low stretcher.

Regency furniture makers utilised high-quality timber veneers such as burr satinwood, mahogany, and rosewood. Construction relied on hand-cut dovetail joints, brass hardware, wood grain matched veneers, and cast brass castors to facilitate movement.

Authentic pieces feature hand-carved drawer linings, natural wood grain variations in the veneer, period-appropriate brass handles, and subtle wear consistent with two centuries of use. Examining the undersides for hand-saw marks and original fixing methods provides further evidence of period manufacture.

A sofa table functions effectively positioned directly behind a free-standing sofa, as a hallway console, or positioned beneath a window. Its drop leaves allow adjusting the overall length to suit compact or spacious living environments.

Satinwood finishes require placement away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent veneer lifting or discolouration. Dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year preserves the natural timber sheen.
