In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This nineteenth-century earthenware platter exemplifies Victorian Chinoiserie style with a blue and white glaze and cobalt pigment. The concave profile rim carries decorative scrolling panels filled with garden and lake scenes, set against a lattice and scrolled ground. The central scene shows tea houses and a pagoda on the banks of a lake with a passing sampan, backed by distant mountains and a small village. The outer border incorporates intricate floral motifs, trees, and traditional architectural elements rendered in tones of cobalt blue. Measuring 32 cm in width, 24 cm in depth, and 3.5 cm in height, the dish suits placement upon a sideboard top within an English Country House interior. It integrates practically into contemporary dining or display arrangements as a serving piece or a decorative accent on a surface.

FAQs

Blue and white transferware refers to earthenware ceramics decorated via a printing process where copperplate engravings transfer ink onto tissue paper, which is then applied to unglazed pottery before firing. Popularised in 18th and 19th century Britain, these pieces frequently featured Chinoiserie landscapes, classical ruins, and pastoral scenes.

Victorian platters were predominantly crafted from dense white earthenware or pearlware, coated with a transparent glaze. Cobalt oxide was the primary pigment used for underglaze decoration because it remained stable at high kiln firing temperatures.

Authentic 19th-century pieces often exhibit stilt marks on the reverse from kiln support, fine glaze crazing, and slight misalignment or overlap in the printed paper transfer seams. The presence of impressed maker marks or registered design numbers beneath the glaze also indicates period origin.

Large decorative platters can be displayed on plate stands atop sideboards, mounted to walls using wire hangers, or used as a central tray on a dining table or kitchen island. Combining multiple blue and white ceramics creates a focal point in both contemporary and traditional spaces.

Wash antique earthenware gently by hand using warm water and mild liquid detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or exposure to dishwashers. Ensure pieces are thoroughly dried before storage and refrain from placing them in microwaves or ovens.
