These English Edwardian oak jockey scales by W & T Avery date to circa 1900, bringing a distinct gentleman's library design vibe to a home. The piece combines a rich warm brown oak stand, square tapering legs with spade feet, a chestnut brown leather seat with brass studs, brass side handles, and a cast iron and brass steelyard balance mechanism. It stands 70 cm high, 65 cm wide, and 49 cm deep, functioning as an accent seating object with a history tied to British racecourses. In a modern home, this piece finds its place beside the front door, serving as a striking conversation starter or a practical bench with integrated weighing scales. The woodwork has a smooth polished finish, complemented by the metallic sheen of the brass fittings and the textured leather upholstery secured with individual studs. The sturdy frame supports the cushioned seat and the integrated balance beam mechanism, maintaining its original mechanical form while offering an unusual seating option.

Jockey scales were designed for the equestrian industry to weigh jockeys before and after horse races, ensuring riders met specific weight regulations. Manufactured by specialist scale makers, these pieces integrated precision balance mechanisms into comfortable seating for sports facilities and private estates.

Authentic Edwardian jockey scales were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany for the framework, paired with cast iron or solid brass balance beams and weights. The seat was commonly upholstered in heavy-grade hide leather fastened with brass studs to withstand frequent use.

Authentic W & T Avery pieces feature maker marks cast or stamped directly onto the brass scale beam, iron levers, or wooden frame. Check for period-appropriate joinery on the timber stand, original lead calibration weights, and genuine patination on the metal components.

An antique jockey scale serves as a distinctive functional statement piece in entry halls, home libraries, or billiard rooms. Its combination of timber, leather, and exposed mechanical brass creates a strong visual anchor when placed beside entryways or within architectural alcoves.

Preserve the oak frame by dusting regularly with a dry cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish annually along the grain. Clean the leather seat with a dedicated leather balm to prevent drying, and avoid harsh chemical cleaners on brass or iron elements to protect the historical surface patina.
