This early twentieth century animalier sculpture depicts a German Shepherd dog in a recumbent pose, resting flat upon an integral rectangular wooden base. Fashioned from solid oak with a rich warm brown and golden patina, the figure displays fine hand-carved texturing to the fur, perked upright ears, and a signature initialled JP on the wood. The naturalistic carving captures the alert expression and muscular form of the canine lying down on all fours with its front paws outstretched. The sculpture measures 32 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 17 cm deep. Suited for display within a gentleman's library or study, the piece provides decorative character when positioned prominently on a mantelpiece, bookshelf, or side cabinet as an accent ornament alongside traditional interior furnishings.

FAQs

Carved wooden animal figures, particularly dogs, gained significant popularity during the late 19th and early 20th centuries across Europe, reflecting the periods interest in naturalism and domestic working breeds.

Sculptors selected dense hardwoods such as oak for durability and grain definition, shaping the form using hand chisels and gouges before applying a protective wax or varnish finish.

Authentic period carvings feature visible chisel mark texture, subtle hand-carved asymmetry, and an original surface patina displaying natural wear consistent with age.

Position the piece on a fireplace mantelpiece, side table, or within a bookshelf alongside leather-bound books and brass objects to introduce warmth and texture to a room.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft cloth and occasionally apply a neutral beeswax paste to maintain wood hydration and protect the original finish, keeping the item away from direct heat sources.
