Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This large three-tier marriage basket originates from Southern China and dates to the 19th Century, specifically the Qing Dynasty period. The object uses lacquered wood, cane, and pigment materials, finished in vibrant shades of red, black, and orange. The piece has an octagonal shape comprising multiple tiered compartments, a high arched overhead handle made with wrapped cane sections, and hand-painted narrative scenes depicting mythical figures across the gilded panel details. Visible signs of age include surface wear across the painted sections and dark toning on the structural frame and base. The item measures 48 cm high, 47 cm wide, and 47 cm deep. Place this decorative basket on a sideboard top or large display table in a living room, hallway, or dining space to hold accessories while adding a traditional maximalist aesthetic to the interior. The design incorporates a secure carrying mechanism and stackable tiers, making it suitable for functional storage or as a standalone ornamental display.

FAQs

Historically used in late Qing dynasty wedding ceremonies, these multi-tiered baskets were loaded with gifts, delicacies, and silks as part of a brides dowry procession to her new home.

These baskets were typically constructed from lightweight wood or woven bamboo, coated in layers of natural tree sap lacquer, painted with mineral pigments, and fitted with sturdy timber handles.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-painted narrative scenes using traditional pigments, subtle cracking or craquelure in the natural lacquer, and timber construction with hand-fitted joinery and cane bindings.

Place the tiered basket on a console table, sideboard, or floor corner to add architectural height, rich colour, and historical character to contemporary or eclectic living spaces.

Keep the piece away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent cracking. Clean gently using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding water, solvents, or commercial polishes.
