Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. This 1920 vintage console table follows traditional English country house style in oak with a warm brown finish. The upper section contains two frieze drawers fitted with batwing brass handles on shaped backplates, beneath a top with a moulded edge. Shaped corner brackets adorn the frieze above ring-turned baluster front legs and square back legs. A planked lower potboard shelf rests between the uprights on pegged joints, providing space for baskets or display. The timber reveals a figured grain pattern with a pleasing patina. Measuring 91 cm wide, 30 cm deep and 83.5 cm high, the narrow proportions suit placement in a hallway, on a landing, beside the front door, or behind a sofa in a home today.

FAQs

A potboard console table is a narrow side table characterised by a lower open shelf, historically known as a potboard, originally designed to keep household items elevated off damp floors.

Traditional 20th-century console tables are predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or fruitwood, featuring brass hardware like swan-neck or batwing drawer pulls.

Look for hand-joined construction details such as dovetail drawer joints, turned baluster legs, period-appropriate brass drop handles, and authentic wear patterns on the lower shelf.

Position the table in a hallway or entryway, styled with a table lamp, a ceramic vessel, and framed artwork or a mirror mounted on the wall directly above it.

Maintain the timber surface by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the wood grain and protective finish.
