Description

A rare French fan with a vinaigrette in the end of the handle. Circa 1900. The sliding mechanism slides to reveal the silk fan which does have damage. The vinaigrette is at the base of the handle. The fan was retailed possibly made by SJM Paris who I believe were sellers of high end goods such as this. It also carries a registration mark Bte SGDG.

This 1900 French hand fan belongs to the 19th Century French style, combining dark brown leather and purple silk with brass and gilt metal fittings. The elongated dark brown leather handle features subtle gold-coloured decorative tooling, a sliding cockade mechanism that deploys the fan, and a hinged vinaigrette grille at the base with a small pierced golden-brass disc. The pleated purple silk leaf fans out in a semi-circle, showing visible fraying and wear along the edges of the folds. Measuring 22.5 cm in length, the piece rests flat on a sideboard top in a drawing room or study as a decorative Victorian accessory or conversation piece.

A vinaigrette fan combines a portable cooling accessory with a small, perforated compartment designed to hold aromatic sponges or smelling salts. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries in France and across Europe, these items served both social etiquette and practical health functions in warm or poorly ventilated environments.

Period hand fans often incorporated pleated silk, paper, or lace mounted on handles crafted from gilt metal, bone, tortoiseshell, leather, or hardwood. The integrated vinaigrette compartments usually featured gilded silver or brass grilles designed to protect the scented sponge stored within.

Look for functional hinged mechanisms or screw caps at the base of the handle revealing a pierced or engraved metal grille. Authentic period pieces demonstrate hand-stitched or hand-pleated textiles, age-appropriate surface wear on metalwork, and mechanical joinery along the sliding or opening elements.

Mount the open fan inside a deep shadow-box frame with UV-protective glass to display it as wall art. Alternatively, position it flat on a velvet-lined tray inside a glass vitrine or atop a console table as an object of curiosity.

Store fans in climate-controlled environments away from direct sunlight, dampness, and heat sources to prevent silk degradation or paper brittleness. Avoid refolding delicate aged fabric unnecessarily, and gently remove dust using a soft, dry artist brush.
