This Regency centre or breakfast table dates from circa 1820 and is made from mahogany with flame mahogany veneer in a warm brown colour. The circular tilt-top displays a striking radial arrangement of veneers enclosed by a contrasting crossbanded border, raised on an elegant tapered pedestal with a carved gadrooned collar. The piece is supported by a triform plinth base with decorative reeded mouldings, terminating in finely carved volute scroll feet. Measuring 74 cm high, 111 cm wide, and 111 cm deep, this table provides a practical surface for daily dining, morning reading, or as a central feature in a spacious reception room or library. The tilt-top mechanism allows the table to be stored compactly against a wall when not in use, making it adaptable for various living arrangements while retaining its traditional presence.

A Regency mahogany breakfast table is a circular or oval table designed in early 19th-century Britain, featuring a central pedestal base and a tilt-top mechanism. Originally positioned in morning rooms or dining areas, these tables were designed to be multi-functional and easily tilted upright to save floor space when not in use.

Regency tables were constructed from solid mahogany and veneered with highly figured flame mahogany cut into radial segments. Construction features typically include a turned central column resting on a triform or quadform plinth base, supported by carved scroll feet or castors.

Authentic Regency pieces feature hand-cut dovetails on the bearer rails, original brass tilt-catch mechanisms, and natural hand-planed timber surfaces underneath the top. Look for period-appropriate proportions, original castors, and wear around the latch and base hinges.

A Regency centre table serves as an architectural focal point in a large entrance hall, foyer, or formal dining room. Pair it with contemporary artwork, a ceramic vessel, or modern seating to create a balanced contrast between traditional timber and modern design.

Keep the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and moisture sources to prevent the mahogany veneer from lifting or cracking. Clean the surface with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the original finish.
