Antique Queen Anne Style Burr Walnut Card Table / Console Table

1900 - 1920
Description

A beautiful antique Queen Anne style burr walnut card table / console table. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1920-30’s period.

It is of outstanding quality, with fine and intricate carving around the top edges, with acanthus leaf carving at the knees. It has a lovely shape, the burr walnut grain patterns and colour tones are gorgeous throughout. The back leg pulls out as a support and contains some hidden storage space, the top flips open to reveal a baize covered playing surface with walnut borders. When closed and not in use it makes an absolutely gorgeous console table.

We have had this recently re-polished, the condition is excellent for its age, with just some extremely minor wear remaining beneath the polish in places.

This English card table and console table dates from the 1920 period in the Queen Anne style. It is made from walnut wood with warm brown burr walnut veneer, finished with a recent re-polish. The piece displays a curved semi-circular top edge, intricate carved decoration along the top moulding, acanthus leaf carvings at the knees of the cabriole legs, and pad feet. The back leg pulls out as a support and contains hidden storage space, and the top flips open to reveal a baize-covered playing surface with walnut borders. The table measures 76 cm high, 92 cm wide, and 46 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this table functions as a console table positioned beside the front door or in a hallway when closed, and opens out for card games or as an occasional surface in a living room or study. The compact proportions make it suitable for smaller entrance halls or reception rooms while providing a practical surface for display or entertainment.

Queen Anne style furniture originated in the early 18th century and is characterised by graceful curves, cabriole legs, pad feet, and the extensive use of figured walnut veneers.

Traditional card tables were predominantly constructed from solid hardwoods such as walnut or mahogany, often featuring decorative burr veneers and hinged fold-over tops.

Authentic design elements include cabriole legs terminating in pad or webbed feet, smooth serpentine borders, hand-carved leaf motifs on the knees, and original brass hinges.

When closed, position the table against a wall as a hallway console or behind a sofa, styled with a table lamp, decorative ceramics, or framed artwork.

Maintain walnut surfaces by placing them away from direct heat and sunlight to avoid drying or fading, and apply a natural beeswax polish periodically along the wood grain.
