Fine Quality Early 19thc Regency Mahogany Drum or Library Table, Possibly Irish

19th century
Description

A fine quality early 19th century (circa 1820) Regency mahogany drum or library table with fine, faded top and unusual carved base, possibly Irish.

This fine quality table consists of a black leather tooled revolving top with outer banding of mahogany and boxwood stringing leading down to a moulded edge of mahogany and boxwood stringing.

This leads down to eight mahogany frieze drawers with boxwood stringing decoration, all oak lined with recessed brass locks similar to Bramah, one drawer stamped with number 2326 - this number possibly being linked to a cabinetmaker or being an item from an inventory belonging to an important house.

The top is supported on an unusual four-splay carved base consisting of four superbly carved S scroll supports leading down to carved paterae to each corner and square plinth with carved scroll decoration, the four splay legs consisting of superbly carved foliate decoration to the front and scroll and foliate decoration to the sides terminating on original brass castors.

This table is in very good condition for age, is of stable construction and can go straight into a home.

This early 19th-century Regency drum or library table is constructed from rich brown mahogany with boxwood stringing inlay, oak linings, and a black leather tooled revolving top featuring a moulded edge. The circular piece incorporates eight frieze drawers fitted with recessed brass locks and round metal hardware. Below the top sits a four-splay carved base incorporating S-scroll supports, carved paterae, foliate decoration, and original brass paw castors. Measuring 76.8 cm high, 129.5 cm wide, and 129.5 cm deep, the table provides a substantial central surface for a home office, study, or library. The stable construction allows it to stand freely in the middle of a room, serving as a functional workspace or a display piece for books and decorative objects.

Originating in the late Georgian and Regency periods, drum tables feature a circular top set above a deep frieze containing drawers, mounted on a central pedestal with splayed legs.

These tables were typically constructed from flame mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring gilded or blind-tooled leather writing surfaces, brass handles, and castors.

Authentic period tables exhibit hand-cut dovetail joints, original brass hardware, natural wood shrinkage around the frieze, and hand-carved detailing on the pedestal and legs.

A circular mahogany drum table functions effectively as a central focal point in an entryway, a statement desk in an office, or an anchor piece in a large living room.

Maintain timber surfaces by applying high-grade beeswax along the grain, while cleaning the leather inset with a damp cloth and treating it with specialised leather conditioner.
