An Ususual Wicker Rattan and Wood Coffee Table from 1890-1910

1900 - 1920
Description

This has come out of my own personal collection! It took me a long time to find a perfect coffee table and this really suited for along time.

Most likely oriental, made of ply type wood, and rattan and wicker. It just screams chinoiserie, maybe its French...I am sure some one will know!

In very good condition, please see pictures

Measures 100x82x40cms

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This unusual late Victorian coffee table dates from 1900 and exhibits a distinctive Chinoiserie influence. The piece is constructed from warm brown wood, wicker, and rattan, displaying natural dark and light grain variations across its wooden surfaces, tightly woven textured borders, and vertical reed slatting around the apron. A recessed rectangular top panel sits within a raised wicker tray border, supported by a wide, tiered plinth base composed of stepped wooden mouldings. The structure shows minor surface patination consistent with normal age and use on the wooden top panel. Measuring 100 cm by 82 cm by 40 cm, the table functions as a central surface in a sunlit conservatory, drawing room, or lounge area, pairing effectively with upholstered seating.

FAQs

Furniture from the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries frequently incorporated natural woven materials such as rattan, wicker, and split cane, reflecting colonial and East Asian influences in Western decorative arts.

These tables typically feature a solid timber frame or center panel clad with woven rattan peel, reed, or cane, built over a layered wooden superstructure.

Authentic period pieces display hand-woven construction details, consistent oxidation and age-related wear on the timber surfaces, natural variation in strand thickness, and period-appropriate joinery.

A dark brown woven table introduces textural contrast alongside modern upholstered seating, functioning well in conservatory settings, bohemian lounge areas, or eclectic layered rooms.

Dust woven areas regularly using a soft brush or vacuum attachment, keep the item away from direct heat sources to prevent cracking, and clean timber panels with a lightly dampened cloth.
