A pair of nineteenth-century Delftware tulipieres comprises two tin-glazed earthenware vases with a distinctive heart-shaped body, multiple upright flower holders across the top edge, and scroll handles on the sides. Each piece stands upon a square pedestal base and displays a hand-painted blue and white palette with pastoral Watteau scenes depicting figures in a landscape under a cloudy sky. The ceramic exhibits typical softness in the tin glaze, with minor restoration to a couple of the flower holders and an old restored chip on a handle. The vases measure 22x18x4 cms. Suitable for display in a traditional interior, these decorative vessels work well arranged symmetrically on a mantelpiece or a side table in a sitting room. They accommodate seasonal stems through their multiple spouts while serving as striking decorative accents in an English country house setting.

A tulipiere, or tulip vase, is a specialised vessel designed to hold individual cut flowers, particularly tulips, which were prized status symbols in 17th-century Europe. Originating in the Netherlands, these vessels feature multiple spouts to allow each stem to be displayed independently while sharing a central water reservoir.

Traditional Delftware is crafted from tin-glazed earthenware, a process where clay objects are fired, dipped in an opaque white tin glaze, hand-painted with metallic oxide pigments such as cobalt blue, and fired a second time to create a porcelain-like finish.

Authentic 19th-century pieces exhibit hand-painted decoration with subtle variations in cobalt blue tone, a soft tin-glaze texture, and potters marks or initials painted on the base. Surface glaze fritting and minor firing imperfections are also consistent indicators of period production.

A pair of tulipieres can be styled symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard top, or dining table to create balanced proportions. They function as standalone decorative ceramic objects or can be filled with single stems of fresh flowers to add height and colour to an interior scheme.

Clean tin-glazed ceramic gently using a soft cloth and lukewarm water mixed with a mild liquid detergent. Avoid submerging porous pottery in water, and never use abrasive scrubbers or chemical cleaners that could scratch the delicate surface glaze.
