This desk accessory is a Gorham Art Deco bronze pen tray from 1930, modelled as a boat hull with a raised gunwale lip and two stepped plinth feet. Cast in dark brown bronze with a deep patinated finish, the piece includes a hull form body, a shaped rudder projection at the stern, and a smooth open interior trough for holding writing instruments. Measuring 7 cm high, 27 cm wide, and 5 cm deep, it sits neatly upon an office desk or library table within a traditional study setting. Placed beside a blotter or inkwell, this compact bronze container keeps everyday stationery organised while adding period character to a working workspace.

Art Deco desk accessories typically feature geometric forms, streamlined contours, and stylised motifs inspired by modern transport, architecture, and machinery. Produced predominantly between 1910 and 1939, these items combined utility with industrial aesthetics, frequently utilising materials such as cast bronze, brass, and bakelite.

Antique bronze pen trays were generally produced using sand-casting or lost-wax casting techniques. Once cast, the raw metal was hand-chased to refine surface detail and treated with chemical patination to achieve uniform dark brown, greenish, or black tones before final polishing.

Authentic Gorham bronze pieces usually feature impressed makers marks on the underside, including the Gorham name, foundry stamps, or specific catalogue model numbers. Original period castings display clear crispness in structural edges, precise weight, and natural wear patterns on contact points.

A bronze pen tray serves as a functional desktop organiser for fountain pens and stationery on an office desk, or as a valet catchall tray on a hallway console or nightstand. The dark metal finish complements warm timber surfaces, leather desk blotters, and neutral stone tops.

Maintain patinated bronze by dusting regularly with a clean, soft, dry cloth. Avoid water, liquid detergents, and abrasive polishes, which can strip historic patination; application of a thin layer of microcrystalline wax can protect the metal from moisture and oxidisation.
