As door handles go, this is by far the most mysterious I’ve ever seen and a favourite find. Dated 1730, initialled and with what looks very much like protection marks commonly seen in medieval churches.

It is a wonderful decorative piece and a rare survivor!

This Georgian door handle belongs to the 18th century and is made of hand-forged wrought iron with a dark brown finish. The object displays a pierced escutcheon plate with stamped initials, a stamped date of 1730, and protection marks commonly seen in medieval churches. It includes a turned grip section with horizontal mouldings and shows wear with surface corrosion. The dimensions measure 31 cm high, 10.5 cm wide, and 6 cm deep. Collectors display this piece in a home today as a decorative object on shelves or sideboards, or mount it as a display item on walls. The heavy metal construction and rustic farmhouse aesthetic make it suitable for historic interiors or studies. The compact size allows placement on mantels or within cabinet displays without taking up excessive space.

In the 18th century, wrought iron door handles were individually crafted by local blacksmiths for timber doors. These architectural fittings often featured date inscriptions, owner initials, and apotropaic markings intended to protect the building from evil spirits.

These pieces were hand-forged from wrought iron using coal-fired hearths, hammers, and anvils. Decorative elements, initial stamps, dates, and protective marks were created using chisels, punches, and hand saws while the iron was workable.

Authentic 18th-century ironwork displays irregular hand-forged hammer marks, slight asymmetries, and natural surface oxidisation. Look for hand-chased lettering, pierced cut-outs, and integrated latch attachments typical of early blacksmithing technique.

While functional on period timber doors, these hardware pieces can also be mounted on custom display stands as standalone decorative metalwork objects. Alternatively, they can be installed on bespoke cabinetry, pantry doors, or timber gates to add historic character.

Clean the surface gently with a soft brush or cloth to remove dust without stripping the natural patina. Apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax or beeswax periodically to prevent surface rust and preserve the dark oxidised finish.
