Antique Victorian Mahogany Buffet Trolley | Cupboard Base

19th century
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique 19th century Victorian buffet trolley in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and practical design.

It features an open upper tier with a raised gallery edge to the back and sides, set above a generous cupboard enclosed by a pair of fielded panel doors. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior fitted with a single shelf, and are secured by a brass lock with a brass escutcheon to the front.

The piece is supported on four ring-turned columns topped with ball finials, which continue down to the base, where the square corner posts give way to turned tapering feet fitted with their original brass castors, allowing it to be moved with ease.

The mahogany displays a lovely figured grain and a warm, rich colour, with a beautiful patina that has developed over many years of use.

Presented in good condition, it would work equally well as a buffet, a serving trolley or a characterful storage piece. A very desirable Victorian buffet, the perfect addition to any dining room, kitchen or hallway.

A Victorian buffet trolley, often referred to as a dinner wagon or dumbwaiter, emerged in nineteenth-century dining rooms as a mobile piece of furniture designed to transport and serve dishes and tableware between the kitchen and dining area.

These pieces were typically constructed from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring turned columns, panelled cupboard doors, brass fittings, and fitted castors for mobility.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples feature period construction details such as hand-cut dovetail joinery, brass wheel castors, turned spindle supports topped with finials, and natural surface patination from historical use.

In contemporary interiors, a Victorian buffet trolley functions effectively as a home bar, a kitchen coffee station, or a multi-tiered display unit in an entryway or dining area.

Dust the timber surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish twice a year along the grain to protect the finish and maintain the wood patination.
