This Georgian tea table originates from the eighteenth century in the Chippendale period, constructed from Cuban mahogany in a rich brown shade with a polished finish. The design incorporates a foldover top with rounded corners above a flame mahogany apron, supported by slender turned legs. Subtle grain variations and warm amber tones run across the wooden surfaces, while the slender legs taper towards plain circular feet. Measuring 91 cm wide, 77 cm high, and 44 cm deep, the proportions suit placement against a narrow wall space in a hallway, living room, or reception room. It serves functionally as an occasional table, side table, lamp table, or traditional tea table within an English country house interior.

During the Georgian era, tea consumption was a prestigious social ritual, prompting the creation of specialised tables designed for serving. These tables typically featured a foldover top that allowed them to be placed neatly against a wall when closed and expanded into a larger surface during gatherings.

High-grade dense timber, predominantly Cuban mahogany, was favoured for its rich figure, durability, and resistance to warping. Construction relied on traditional joinery techniques including hand-cut dovetail joints, wood pegging, and brass butt hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit evidence of period craftsmanship, such as uneven hand-sawn markings on unexposed undersides, hand-cut dovetails, original brass hardware with natural oxidisation, and a distinct weight resulting from dense tropical hardwoods.

Positioned flat against a wall, a foldover tea table serves as an elegant hall console or side table in a living room. Styling with modern artwork, ceramic lamps, or minimalist decor creates a refined contrast between period woodwork and contemporary design.

Dust regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to maintain the timbers sheen. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent drying, fading, or movement in the wood.
