This 18th century George II Irish Chippendale card and side table is made from dark brown mahogany with a polished finish. The furniture piece has a fold-over top above a central oak-lined cockbeeded drawer fitted with an original brass handle. The shaped corners and cabriole legs display carved shell knees and terminate in drake-shaped feet, alongside rounded corners and fine timber grain. Measuring 73.5 cm high by 103 cm wide and 51 cm deep, the table fits neatly into living spaces. In a contemporary home, the table suits a narrow wall space in a hallway, living room, or study, functioning as a console or side surface when closed, or opening to provide a gaming table with interior counter wells. The English Country House style complements traditional interiors, while the sturdy proportions and quality timber construction provide a practical surface for daily use. The period craftsmanship is evident in the detailed carving and traditional joinery.

George II card tables were produced in Great Britain and Ireland during the reign of King George II (17271760). They are characterised by fold-over tops designed for card games like whist, supported by carved cabriole legs, shell or acanthus knee details, and shaped turrets or porringer corners designed to hold candlesticks and counters.

These tables were primarily constructed using dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, valued for its rich grain and stability. Secondary timber such as pine or oak was used for drawer linings and internal framing, with construction relying on hand-cut dovetail joints, wood pegging, and cast brass hardware.

Authentic pieces exhibit irregular hand-sawn wood marks, hand-carved decorative motifs, and natural timber shrinkage over time. The underside often reveals hand-planed secondary woods, original iron hinges, and hand-cut joinery consistent with 18th-century cabinetmaking.

When folded closed, a card table functions as a compact console table or hallway accent piece, providing surface space for lamps or ceramics. Its deep timber tones complement neutral colour palettes and provide visual contrast against modern architectural lines.

Maintain mahogany furniture by dusting regularly with a soft, dry cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year along the grain. Position the table away from direct sunlight, radiators, and extreme changes in humidity to prevent wood warping or finish degradation.
