Strickland & Russell has dated this Georgian Antique Road Map to the 1800s.
Date of publication: Circa 1820s. Exact edition unconfirmed.

Surface: Watermarked paper with hand-colouring.
Details: An interesting Georgian road map published by R. H. Laurie, No. 53 Fleet Street, London.
Plate 23 shows the opening section of the Edinburgh road via Ware, together with connecting routes through Cambridge, Ely and Wisbech towards King’s Lynn, Burnham Market and Wells on the Norfolk coast. Other places shown include Hertford, Royston, Huntingdon, Newmarket and Spalding.

Distances are measured from Shoreditch Church, as stated beneath the map. Includes mileage figures, cross-references to other plates, county boundary colouring and a mileage scale.
The paper bears a “J Whatman” watermark visible when held to the light. An appealing record of travel routes before the railway age.

Condition Report: Worn antique condition. Horizontal centre fold or split with a substantial old reinforcing repair across the reverse; the repair strip is damaged and lifting in places. Several edge tears and small losses, particularly along the left-hand edge, with a further tear extending from the top edge into the heading. General creasing, unevenness, age toning and scattered spotting and marks. The map remains legible and the hand-colouring presents well. Supplied unframed. Please inspect photographs carefully for full details.
