This vintage mid-century commercial advertising display figure represents the iconic dogs associated with Black and White whisky. The composition features a black Scottish Terrier alongside a white West Highland White Terrier, mounted on a black moulded base decorated with raised lettering that reads Scotch Black and White Whisky. Produced by Brentleigh Ware during the 1930s period, the piece is constructed from plaster with a hand-painted finish displaying slight surface wear and minor paint chips. The base exhibits a curved oval shape supporting both animal figures in a seated posture. Practical placement for this collectible barware object includes a sideboard top within a gentleman's library setting. Physical dimensions measure 22 cms in height, 29 cms in width, and 10 cms in depth.

FAQs

James Buchanan created the Black & White Scotch Whisky brand in the late 19th century. The company introduced the black Scottish Terrier and white West Highland White Terrier as advertising mascots in the 1890s, leading to extensive production of point-of-sale display items for pubs and taverns throughout the 20th century.

Mid-century commercial pub advertising figures were commonly crafted from cast plaster, chalkware, papier-mache, or moulded rubber composition before being hand-painted with branded lettering and details.

Authentic period displays feature cast-in or raised lettering along the base, age-appropriate surface wear to the paint, hand-finished painted details, and structural materials such as plaster or heavy composition rather than modern lightweight plastics.

Vintage barware and promotional statues are typically styled on sideboard tops, inside drinks cabinets, or on home bar shelving to add historical character to entertainment spaces.

Clean painted plaster figures using a soft, dry brush or microfibre cloth to remove dust. Avoid using liquid cleaners, damp sponges, or solvents, as moisture can lift vintage paint finishes and damage underlying plaster.
