Dealers Notes

Our stock includes early oak and walnut furniture from the 18th century, as well as more formal pieces from the Georgian period. Clocks, barometers and globes are complemented by Colonial cabinets, furniture and early arms. Their scientific instruments, which include early microscopes, telescopes and equipment such as sextants, provide a fascinating insight into the evolution of technology, whilst demonstrating fine artistry and craftsmanship. One of Hansord’s many exhibitions was entitled ‘From simplicity to complexity with a little eccentricity’ and this continues to be the guiding mantra behind their collection today.

This Victorian antique six bore percussion fowling piece originates from around 1800. The long firearm combines a dark brown steel barrel with a warm, richly grained walnut stock displaying a chequered wrist grip. A percussion lock mechanism sits ahead of the curved trigger guard, while metallic hardware secures the wooden fore-end along the extensive length of the barrel. Originally functioning as a flintlock mechanism, this piece underwent an early conversion. Measuring 145 cm in overall length, the substantial weapon commands attention through its imposing proportions and industrial build quality. Homeowners place such historical sporting guns above the mantel in a study, library, or a Highland hunting lodge styled interior. The item mounts securely on display brackets as a focal point among traditional decor, celebrating early nineteenth century gunsmithing heritage without additional modern modifications.

A fowling piece is a smoothbore firearm developed specifically for hunting waterfowl and wildfowl. Originating prior to modern shotguns, these guns feature extended barrels to burn black powder efficiently and maximize shot velocity at long ranges.

Nineteenth-century fowling pieces were primarily constructed with steel or iron barrels, paired with dense hardwood stocks, most commonly figured walnut. Trigger guards and lock mechanisms were crafted from forged iron or steel, occasionally featuring brass fittings or silver escutcheons.

Authentic period examples feature period-correct maker marks or proof marks struck into the barrel underside, functional percussion cap nipples, hand-carved chequering on the stock wrist, and signs of genuine age such as natural metal oxidisation.

An antique fowling piece is typically mounted horizontally using brass or wooden wall brackets above a fireplace mantelpiece, within a study, or above a sideboard in a hallway to complement traditional wood paneling or muted paint palettes.

The metal components should be wiped regularly with microcrystalline wax or specialist gun oil to prevent rust formation. The wooden stock should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct heat sources and conditioned with high-grade beeswax.
