Antique Victorian Rosewood Drop Leaf Sutherland Occasional Table

Description

A superb antique Victorian rosewood drop leaf table, traditionally known as a Sutherland table, dating to circa 1850. Made from beautifully figured rosewood with a rich colour and elegant proportions, it is a particularly attractive and versatile example of this practical Victorian design.

The table has two large drop leaves which open to create a generously sized occasional or dining surface, while folding neatly down when not required. This makes it especially useful in a drawing room, sitting room, hallway or smaller dining area where flexibility is important.

The shaped top displays the natural figuring of the rosewood beautifully, with a gently moulded edge and elegant scalloped outline. The base is particularly decorative, with finely carved and pierced end supports, scrolling detail, turned central finials and a shaped stretcher beneath.

The additional turned supports are fitted with brass castors, allowing the table to be moved easily, while the combination of carved detail and finely proportioned supports gives it a much more refined appearance than many simpler drop leaf tables of the period.

The rosewood has developed a lovely deep reddish-brown tone with attractive natural grain throughout. Whether displayed open or closed, the table has a graceful and decorative silhouette.

A handsome and highly versatile Victorian rosewood table, combining decorative carving, beautiful timber and a practical folding design. It would work equally well as an occasional table, side table, small dining table or decorative centre table in either a traditional or contemporary interior.
