Antique Mason’s Patent Ironstone China Blue & White Chinoiserie Planter, circa 1900

An attractive antique English Mason’s Patent Ironstone China rectangular planter or small jardinière, dating to the late Victorian/Edwardian period, circa 1900.

Decorated in rich underglaze blue with a continuous chinoiserie landscape of traditional Chinese-style pagodas, pavilions, trees, rocky scenery, water and small sailing boats. The shaped rectangular body is raised upon a spreading foot decorated with a further floral border.

Particularly attractive are the two small cobalt-blue side handles, picked out with gilt decoration, providing an appealing contrast against the blue-and-white body.

The underside carries the blue printed MASON’S – PATENT IRONSTONE CHINA – ENGLAND crown and banner backstamp.

Mason’s Patent Ironstone is one of the best-known names in English Staffordshire ceramics. This example belongs to the later Ashworth period of Mason’s production and retains the strongly Chinese-inspired decoration for which Mason’s ironstone became renowned.

Dimensions: approximately 19 cm long × 12 cm wide × 7 cm high.

Condition: This piece has considerable age-related damage and is priced accordingly. There are multiple old hairline cracks through the body and base, including cracks extending from the rim, together with crazing, staining and general age-related wear.
