Description

Rare Japanese cloisonne enamel suigaraake (ashtray) netsuke. Circa 1900.

Cloisonne enamel work to the domed back and a swinging loop for hanging. Comprising of geometrical shapes and scrolling swirls, decorated with light blue, dark blue, red and black enamels. Most likely forming part of a tobacco pouch or purse. Rarity includes an inserted round white metal silver panel with figure in relief to the inner side of the tray / dome (silver disc moves / pivots slightly). The suigaraake has most likely been re-purposed to a more decorative object in the form of a manju, and then used to secure a hanging pouche or container from a kimono sash.

Condition: Good condition with some age related marks. Silver panel insert nicely patinated.
