19th‑century Damascus Envelope Games Table

19th century
Description

A finely crafted 19th‑century Syrian Damascus envelope games table, richly decorated with traditional geometric parquetry and marquetry in walnut, fruitwoods, bone and coloured tesserae. The folding envelope top opens to reveal a reversible games surface: one side a crisply inlaid chessboard, the other a newly felted playing surface, with a backgammon board housed beneath.

The exterior displays the classic Damascus aesthetic — intricate micro‑mosaic inlay, checkerboard banding, and symmetrical geometric panels — all showing excellent colour, clarity and patination. The table stands on elegant cabriole legs, each decorated with matching inlay, giving the piece a sculptural presence.

A functional and decorative object, combining Levantine craftsmanship with European furniture form, and increasingly sought after by collectors of Middle Eastern decorative arts.

W60cm (opening to 85cm), H75cm

This 19th-century Syrian Damascus games table demonstrates Ottoman style, rendered in walnut, fruitwoods, bone, and mother of pearl with a warm brown colour palette. The square envelope folding top presents complex geometric parquetry, intricate micro-mosaic inlay, checkerboard banding, red diamond accents, and a central inlaid chessboard, supported by curved cabriole legs decorated with matching inlay. Additional observable details include square corner panels with multi-pointed star motifs and visible surface patination. The table measures W60cm opening to 85cm by H75cm. In a contemporary home, this piece functions as a decorative table or games surface placed in an empty corner, a gentleman's library, or a living room.

A Damascus envelope games table is an occasional table originating from Syria, characterised by triangular hinged flaps that unfold like an envelope to reveal a playing surface, often adorned with geometric marquetry and micro-mosaic wood inlay.

Traditional Damascus inlaid furniture typically utilises a structural frame of walnut or fruitwood, intricately ornamented with mother-of-pearl, bone, camel bone, and contrasting woods such as olive, lemon, and rosewood.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-cut marquetry tiles, slight irregularities in geometric patterns, original oxidation on metal hardware, and natural wear patterns along hinged joints and table edges.

A Syrian games table can serve as an occasional side table in a reading nook, a accent piece in a study, or a focal point in a living room, pairing well with neutral tones and textured fabrics.

Keep the piece in a stable environment with controlled humidity to prevent wood movement, dust regularly with a soft dry microfiber cloth, and avoid liquid cleaners or direct sunlight.
