This 18th-century Continental devotional icon takes the form of a Rococo shadowbox, housing a polychrome wax figure of Saint Catherine of Alexandria complete with her traditional wheel and sword symbols. The warm gold giltwood frame displays elaborate rocaille scrollwork, curved mouldings, and an arched glass front enclosing the figure against a pale blue background with floral arrangements. Visible details include intricate wirework, delicate modelling, and subtle ageing along the carved wooden surfaces. Measuring 23 cm high by 17 cm wide by 3 cm deep, the piece mounts easily to a narrow wall space or sits on a narrow shelf within a living room, hallway, or study to add a traditional decorative accent.

Wax devotional icons are three-dimensional religious images created for private prayer, featuring modelled beeswax figures set inside protective framed enclosures or shadowboxes, popular throughout 17th and 18th-century Europe.

Craftsmen utilised carved timber with gesso and gold leaf for the frame, while the central scene combined hand-modelled beeswax, metallic threads, glass beads, dried botanical elements, and fabric trims protected behind glass.

Authentic pieces exhibit natural age-related surface craquelure, oxidation on metallic elements, hand-blown glass irregularities, and hand-carved timber frames showing gesso ground under the gilding.

Mount the piece as an focal accent on a narrow wall space, integrate it into a curated gallery wall, or place it on a deep shelf alongside contrasting contemporary ceramics and structured greenery.

Display the item away from direct sunlight, radiators, and ambient heat sources to prevent the wax from softening. Dust the external giltwood frame lightly with a soft, dry brush and clean the glass face using a dry microfibre cloth.
