A Substantial Victorian Oak Extending Table Circa 1880

19th century
Description

A magnificent late Victorian carved oak wind-out extending dining table, dating to circa 1890. Of particularly impressive proportions, the table extends from a substantial 152 cm (5 ft) circular dining table to an exceptional 357 cm (11 ft 8½ in) when fully open using its four removable leaves. Making it suitable for twelve to fourteen people depending on the width of the chairs.

The beautiful oak top is surrounded by a deeply carved decorative edge and raised on four exceptionally well-carved and substantial turned legs, incorporating foliate decoration and carved floral blocks. The table retains its traditional winding extension mechanism, allowing the four leaves to be added or removed as required.

Gadrooned border along the tabletop edge: decorative detailing of the late Victorian decades.

This substantial Victorian oak extending table, dating to circa 1880, serves as a versatile dining table in a home today. The piece is constructed from quarter-sawn oak with a warm brown finish and features carved egg-and-dart moulding along the edge of the top, heavily carved bulbous turned legs with acanthus leaves, and visible winding hardware. Around the table sit matching dining chairs upholstered in light cream fabric with metal stud trim. The table measures 74 cm high, 152 cm wide, and 357 cm deep when fully extended using its four removable leaves. In a dining room or large kitchen space, the piece accommodates twelve to fourteen people for formal dinner parties or family gatherings. The wind-out mechanism allows the surface to reduce to a smaller circular form when fewer seats are needed. The solid wood construction and robust carved detailing provide a functional centerpiece for daily meals as well as large-scale entertaining.

Late Victorian dining tables typically feature grand proportions, rich quarter-sawn oak, and elaborate hand-carved detailing along the apron and turned legs.

These tables were constructed using solid hardwood frames fitted with telescopic wooden screw mechanisms, allowing extra leaves to be added or removed as required.

Authentic pieces feature original winding mechanisms, period-appropriate joinery underneath the top, natural quarter-sawn wood figure, and period hand-carving techniques.

To integrate a heavy oak table into a contemporary setting, pair it with modern upholstered dining chairs, neutral textiles, and streamlined lighting to create a balanced contrast.

Apply high-quality beeswax regularly along the grain, protect the surface from hot items or direct moisture, and position the table away from direct heat sources to prevent wood movement.
