Chinese Famille Verte Large Dish – Kangxi Period

A very attractive large Chinese Famille Verte porcelain dish, dating to the Kangxi period (1662–1722) of the Qing Dynasty.

This impressive antique Chinese dish is of particularly good size and is decorated in the characteristic Famille Verte palette, with strong and well-preserved green enamels. The decoration includes flowering chrysanthemums and floral sprays, together with birds and fish, arranged across the dish within decorative borders. The combination of floral and naturalistic decoration gives the piece considerable visual appeal and is typical of the highly sought-after Kangxi-period Famille Verte style.

The dish retains good, strong original Famille Verte enamelling and presents well for its age. There is a single line to the well of the dish, predominantly located between either side of the foot rim. There are no chips and no other cracks or significant lines noted.

The existing line appears suitable for professional cleaning and sealing, should the new owner wish to undertake conservation work to improve presentation. The dish is otherwise an attractive and substantial example of Kangxi-period Chinese export and domestic porcelain.

FAQs

Famille verte porcelain, developed predominantly during the Kangxi reign (16621722) of the Qing Dynasty, is characterised by translucent overglaze enamels dominated by shades of green, complemented by iron-red, yellow, aubergine, and black pigments.

These items were crafted using kaolin clay fired at high temperatures to produce a hard-paste porcelain body, followed by the detailed application and secondary low-temperature firing of overglaze enamel decoration.

Authentic pieces typically feature luminous enamels with subtle iridescent haloing around green pigments, precise brushwork depicting flora or fauna, and characteristic chatter marks or iron spots on the unglazed foot rim.

A decorative porcelain charger can be displayed upright on a plate stand atop a sideboard or mantelpiece, mounted securely on a wall, or arranged within a glazed display cabinet.
