Description

A pair of Chinese Kang XI blue & white shipwreck blue & white shallow dishes from the Vung Tau Cargo, late 17th Century, bearing 'Vung Tau Cargo' lot stickers from the Christies, Amsterdam auction of April 1992, and collection identification numbers painted to the raised foot.

The 'VUNG TAU CARGO' was discovered in 1989 by a Vietnamese fisherman on the Southern Coast of Vietnam. The cargo was salvaged by the Vietnam Salvage Corporation and the contents subsequently sold at Christie's Amsterdam in April 1992. 

The ship was an Asian trading vessel, dated to circa 1690 during the reign of the Emperor Kangxi. It had been burnt to the waterline as it was bound for Indonesia from China. Batavia (now Jakarta) was the centre of the enormous Dutch East India Company (VOC) where the consignment would have been prepared for an onward voyage to Holland.

Vung Tau cargo porcelain refers to Chinese export ceramics recovered from an Asian vessel shipwrecked off the coast of Vietnam around 1690 during the reign of Emperor Kangxi. These pieces were produced in Jingdezhen for European trade before remaining submerged for centuries.

These dishes were formed from white porcelain clay, decorated by hand using cobalt blue pigment under the glaze, and fired in high-temperature kilns. Prolonged exposure to seawater has modified the original clear glaze finish.
