These two 19th century Victorian astronomical magic lantern slides originate from around 1840. Each piece takes the form of a rectangular wooden frame housing a hand-painted glass aperture. The timber possesses a warm brown colour and a visible grain. Attached to the side of each frame is a small brass hand crank featuring a turned dark wooden handle. The glass elements display hand-coloured maps of the Earth and planetary diagrams in shades of blue, yellow, green, and pink. A dark circular masking ring frames the imagery on one slide. Each frame measures 18 x 11.5 cm, with a total width including the winding handle of 22 cm.
