Antique Ottoman Style Glass Roundel with Gilt Metal Filigree and Blue Glass, c.1900

An unusual late 19th to early 20th century decorative glass roundel, probably of Middle Eastern or Ottoman-influenced origin.

The circular transparent glass body is embellished with finely applied twisted metal wire, scrolling filigree-style ornament, granulated bead decoration and concentric gilt-metal borders.

At the centre is a diamond-shaped blue glass panel bearing a stylised calligraphic or emblematic motif. The design has an Ottoman character and may have been inspired by the tughra tradition, although the inscription cannot be securely attributed to a particular Ottoman sultan and is therefore described conservatively.

The reverse clearly shows the handmade construction through the glass, together with age-related clouding, small bubbles, surface wear and oxidation to the metalwork.

The exact original function is uncertain. It may have formed a decorative plaque, inset, box or furniture ornament, or possibly a small presentation piece.
