A vellum indenture is a legal deed or agreement executed on prepared animal skin, characterized by top or side edges cut in an indented or wavy pattern to match a duplicate copy for authentication.

Historic indentures were predominantly crafted from durable calf, sheep, or goat skin vellum, inscribed with iron gall ink, and finished with blue duty paper stamps and red wax seals.

Authentic period documents feature handwritten copperplate or court hand calligraphy, distinct natural skin grain texture, original revenue tax stamps fixed with metallic fasteners, and intact wax seals.

An antique document can be conservation framed in a contemporary float frame to emphasize its textured edges, serving as focal wall art in a study, library, or hallway.

Vellum should be kept in a climate-controlled environment away from direct sunlight, excess humidity, and heat sources to prevent shrinkage, cockling, or fading of ink and wax.
