Antique Japanese Kutani Porcelain Charger Hand Painted Meiji Taisho C.1910 26cm

An attractive antique Japanese Kutani porcelain charger / display plate, probably dating to the late Meiji to early Taishō period, circa 1900–1925.

The 26cm porcelain plate is richly decorated in bright polychrome overglaze enamels and gilt, with alternating shaped reserves depicting figures in courtly or domestic interior scenes, birds amongst flowers and foliage, and auspicious fruit motifs, all surrounded by elaborate scrolling and geometric borders.

The vivid reds, greens, blues and gilt are characteristic of decorative Kutani export porcelain of the late Meiji and early Taishō periods. Although the colours remain notably bright, this is not unusual on pieces that have been primarily displayed rather than heavily used, and the dating is therefore based on the overall style, decoration and period characteristics rather than colour intensity alone.

The reverse bears a red-painted Japanese seal or workshop mark. The mark has not been securely attributed to a specific artist or kiln, so it is conservatively described rather than over-interpreted.
