Designed by Samuel Colt between 1847 and 1850, the Colt Model 1851 Navy is a cap and ball .36 calibre percussion revolver manufactured until 1873. It was widely used during mid-19th-century conflicts and became a standard sidearm for military officers and civilians alike.

These revolvers were constructed using a forged steel frame, cylinder, and octagonal barrel, paired with a brass or iron trigger guard and a carved walnut wood grip.

Authentic examples feature a distinctive octagonal barrel, matching serial numbers stamped across the frame, cylinder, and barrel lug, alongside specific manufacturer barrel lines and cylinder roll-engraved markings.

Antique firearms are commonly displayed in bespoke glass cases, on custom brass stands, or wall-mounted within shadow frames. Positioning such an item on a study desk or bookshelf provides a historical focal point.

To prevent surface oxidisation, store the item in a humidity-controlled environment. Periodically apply a thin layer of microcrystalline wax or gun oil to protect the steel, and treat the walnut grip with conservation-grade wood polish.
