Description

Pair Large Sancai Glazed Chinese Pottery Musician Figures – Tang Dynasty Style

Brief Description:

A magnificent and highly decorative pair of large Chinese sancai-glazed pottery figures, modelled as elegant female musicians in the Tang Dynasty style.

Dating to the early 20th century, circa 1930–1940, these impressive figures stand an imposing 32 inches (81.2 cm) in height.

Each lady is beautifully modelled wearing traditional flowing robes, decorated in rich amber, green and cream sancai-style glazes, with elaborately arranged dark hair and delicately rendered facial features.

Each figure is depicted holding or playing a musical instrument, giving the pair considerable character and presence. Their softly finished, largely unglazed faces provide an attractive contrast to the richly coloured glazed robes.

The figures display particularly well as a pair and, owing to their substantial size, make a striking decorative statement piece for an interior.

A wonderful and unusual pair of large Chinese decorative figures with tremendous visual impact.

Sancai, meaning three colours, is a Chinese ceramic glazing technique developed during the Tang Dynasty using lead-based glazes coloured with metal oxides to produce amber, green, cream, and brown hues.

Sancai figures were fashioned from earthenware or terracotta clay, shaped using moulds or hand-modelling, fired at low temperature, coated in lead-based mineral glazes, and fired a second time.

Authentic Tang originals usually exhibit extensive iridescence or silvery decay from centuries underground, fine glaze crazing, unglazed terracotta bases, and specific clay compositions verified through thermoluminescence testing.

Place a pair of figures on a dark wood sideboard, console table, or inside a curated display cabinet to create a striking focal point against neutral walls.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth or dry soft-bristled brush, avoiding water, chemical cleaners, or abrasive materials that could erode fragile glazes or polychrome details.
