Antique Victorian Burr Walnut Card Console Table with Ormolu Mounts and Inlay

19th century
Description

A very attractive Victorian burr walnut card console table of excellent quality, beautifully figured throughout with rich colour and striking grain. The top is finely inlaid with delicate line work and opens to reveal a baize lined playing surface, a feature typical of better quality mid 19th century examples.

The shaped serpentine front is adorned with decorative ormolu mounts adding a refined contrast against the warmth of the walnut. The table stands on elegantly turned and carved legs with unusual original porcelain castors, a particularly nice detail rarely found intact and a strong sign of originality.

The interior retains its original configuration, designed for card playing and social games. In the Victorian period such tables were used in drawing rooms for entertaining guests, then closed to sit neatly against the wall as a console, making it highly versatile for modern interiors.

Condition Report: In good antique condition with minor age related wear. The colour and patina are excellent. Very minor surface marks consistent with use. The baize is clean and usable. Castors are original and in good working order.

A Victorian burr walnut card table is a mid-to-late 19th-century piece of occasional furniture designed for social card games, featuring a fold-over top that reveals a playing surface when opened and converts into a compact console table when closed.

These tables typically feature figured burr walnut veneers applied over solid timber frames, often embellished with marquetry inlay and cast ormolu or brass edge mouldings. The construction includes a swivel-top or rear gate-leg mechanism to support the extended leaf, resting on turned or carved support legs with ceramic or brass castors.

Authentic Victorian pieces display genuine hand-cut or early machine-cut joinery, period-correct ceramic or brass castors, and natural age-related patination on the underside and interior storage compartments. Additionally, genuine burr walnut exhibits irregular timber grain swirl patterns rather than modern printed veneers.

When closed, the table functions as a slim console in a hallway, entry space, or narrow living area beneath framed artwork or a mirror. Positioned in a living room alcove, it can be dressed with lamps or decorative ceramics, then opened for use during social gatherings.

Keep the furniture away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent the timber veneer from drying, cracking, or lifting. Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth, nourish the wood with natural beeswax polish twice a year, and clean brass or ormolu mounts gently without abrasive chemical cleaners.
