Chinese Bronze Dragon Scholar’s Paperweight / Brush Rest, C.1900

1900 - 1920
Description

Chinese Bronze Dragon Scholar’s Paperweight / Brush Rest, c.1900

An unusual Chinese cast bronze scholar’s object modelled as a recumbent mythical dragon, dating to the late Qing / early Republic period.

The substantial creature is finely modelled with a powerful dragon head, prominent brows and horns, open mouth, scrolling mane and a scaled body terminating in a curled tail. Further detailing extends across the back, legs and feet.

Of compact but notably heavy construction, weighing approximately 412 grams at only 9cm long, the piece was most likely intended as a scholar’s desk paperweight or possibly a brush rest.

The bronze displays an attractive naturally varied surface with deep brown patination, warmer copper-brown wear to the raised areas and areas of green oxidation within the recesses.

Chinese scholar’s objects were traditionally produced in numerous forms, with dragons and other auspicious mythical creatures particularly favoured as paperweights and brush rests.
