Sofa tables emerged during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, designed specifically to sit behind a sofa or against a wall to hold writing materials, books, or tea service.

These tables were typically crafted from high-grade timbers such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring flame mahogany veneers, hand-cut dovetail drawers, and solid brass castors.

Look for period-appropriate brass hardware, signs of hand-planed secondary timbers like oak or pine inside drawers, natural timber shrinkage along the top, and historic wear on the castors.

Position the table behind a sofa or in an entryway as a console table, styled with a pair of contemporary lamps, stacked books, and decorative ceramic vessels.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber shrinkage.
