Chinese Carved Jade Dragon & Phoenix Group on Hardwood Stand, C.1950–1970

1940 - 1960
Description

Chinese Carved Jade Dragon & Phoenix Group on Hardwood Stand, c.1950–1970

A finely carved Chinese pale green jade or hardstone group depicting a dragon and phoenix amongst scrolling foliage and cloud forms, raised on a fitted carved hardwood stand.

The composition is extensively pierced and worked in high relief, with the dragon winding through the upper section and the phoenix emerging below. The stone displays attractive variations of pale celadon and soft green colouring with areas of translucency.

The dragon and phoenix are among the most important auspicious motifs in Chinese decorative art, traditionally associated with harmony, prosperity and imperial symbolism.

The style, carving technique and decorative format are consistent with Chinese jade and hardstone carvings produced during the mid-20th century, particularly during the People's Republic period.

The material is believed to be jadeite, although it has not been laboratory tested and is therefore offered conservatively as jade/hardstone.

A highly decorative example with strong visual presence and an attractive original-style hardwood display stand.

Origin: China

Date: Circa 1950–1970

Material: Jade / hardstone, believed jadeite

Height: Approx. 17 cm including stand

Condition: Very good overall condition with minor age-related surface wear. Please refer to photographs for full condition.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The dragon and phoenix combined represent balance, harmony, and marital bliss, frequently associated with the double happiness character in traditional Chinese lapidary art.

These pieces are typically hand-carved from nephrite or jadeite minerals, utilizing natural colour variations in the stone, and mounted onto custom-fitted hardwood stands.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved tool marks, intricate piercing work, cool surface temperatures, and distinct natural stone inclusions or translucency under close inspection.

Position the sculpture on a well-lit console table, bookshelf, or mantelpiece where natural or ambient light can highlight the translucency and detail of the stone.

Dust gently with a soft dry brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that may damage natural mineral surfaces or wood finishes.
