Description

A substantial early Victorian bone china tazza or footed comport, produced at Coalport, Shropshire, circa 1840–1850. The factory, founded by John Rose in 1795, continued to trade as John Rose & Co. after his death in 1841.

The circular shallow bowl is designed in four lobed sections and fitted with two opposing pierced scrolling handles. A deeply scalloped rim is moulded with foliate Rococo ornament, while the broad turquoise border frames a white central reserve painted with a small gilt floral motif.

The bowl is permanently joined to a baluster-shaped foot. Its acanthus leaves, scrolling relief and shaped edge are enriched with gilding, continuing the contrast of turquoise, white and gold across the piece. The underside has a white glaze finish with a central hollow firing assembly core; no factory mark is visible.

Coalport ornamental wares of this period combined technically ambitious moulding with colour and gilt decoration inspired by French Rococo porcelain. This large comport is an effective Victorian table centrepiece and a fine addition to a collection of English bone china.
