Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Butterfield type sundial is a portable horological instrument developed in the late seventeenth century, named after the English instrument maker Michael Butterfield. It features an adjustable or folding gnomon and an integrated magnetic compass, allowing users to align the dial to magnetic north and calculate solar time across various latitudes.

Pocket sundials were typically crafted from cast or sheet brass, silver, pewter, or electrum. The compass glass was held by metal bezels, while the protective fitted cases were commonly constructed from wood or pasteboard lined with velvet or silk and covered in leather or shagreen.

Authentic nineteenth-century pieces feature hand-engraved or stamped hour lines, period-appropriate typography, and hand-cut hinges. Oxidation, natural patina on the brass, directional compass card markings, and hand-stitched fitted cases are key indicators of period age.

Pocket sundials function as decorative scientific curiosities. They are ideal for placement on an office desk, inside a glass cloche, or within a curated shelf display alongside leather-bound books and classic scientific objects.

Keep the instrument in a dry environment to prevent corrosion. Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth, avoid harsh chemical polishes that strip historical patina, and store the item inside its original fitted case away from direct moisture.
